E-commerce in Romania

Here’s a new step in my blog story: first blog post in english. Why that? Because I need to exercise my written English and because I can (sic!).

Now, some weeks ago I was talking to Claudiu and he was telling me that he’s involved, as he did every year, in the Romanian E-Commerce Market Study. This year’s opportunity is that the national authority in Communication, ANC, is involved in the study and that Link2eCommerce magazine is the partner. Link2eCommerce is behind the BEST annual event dedicated to the online market: The eCommerce Awards Conference and Gala.

Let’s get back to the study with some insights:
- first online shop in Romania – CyberShop.ro, 1997 (selling music cds)
- introducing of 3D Secure security system in Romania – February 2004
- 5% of the websites in Romania are online shops – 2008
- top presence in online shops: computer accessories, computer memory, printers, laptops, digital cameras
- Bucharest is holding almost 63% of the e-commerce businesses in Romania, followed by Cluj county (almost 4%) and Timis county (3%)
- 60 millions EUR forecast for total amount of payments in 2008 through 3D Secure
- at least 50% market growth per year for the next 3 years (forecast)
- the Romanian shopper: 65% male, age 27, educated (36% high school, 37% university degree)
